Liz Graveline Show EP 10: How I Eat For Energy As A Mom Without Cutting Or Counting Calories

Sunshine, Nostalgia & the Reminder We All Need

I just got back from Florida, and honestly, there’s nothing like a little sun-kissed glow to lift your mood and make you feel refreshed. My husband Ken and I took the kids to Pompano Beach, a place that holds such a special place in my heart. I’ve been going there since I was a little girl — it’s always been my happy place.

Leaving was tough. It brought back those old feelings I had as a teen, when I'd have to leave vacations early to get back to training for gymnastics. The same sadness bubbled up as we packed our bags this time, because the trip was just thatgood. Our kids are finally at an age where they’ve gotten the hang of traveling (shoutout to Ken for being the car seat pro, because I’m not the one for that job), and we all found a rhythm that made everything easy and fun.

Of course, every year after a trip like this, the same conversation pops up:
“Could we just move here?”

The sunshine, the clear water, the happy people — it’s hard not to imagine an entirely different life where winter doesn't trap you indoors for months on end. But, like always, family roots win, and we head back home to Connecticut. Winter hibernation mode and all.

The Power of Small Routines

Back home, the focus shifts from beachside bliss to keeping that healthy, happy vibe going in everyday life. And one thing that helps me most is having little routines that make me feel my best — physically and mentally.

Something as simple as laying out a cute workout outfit can shift your mood and help you feel pulled toward action, not away from it. My go-to? CRZ Yoga leggings (they’re soft but still give you a flattering little hug) and a cropped Atoria Activewear top. Pro tip: size up for comfort!

Eating for Energy — Not Perfection

I’ve had a lot of friends ask me what I eat to stay fit, and the truth is: I don’t overcomplicate it. I focus on feeling my best, not on chasing a number on a scale or obsessing over calories.

Here are my three simple food rules:

  1. Whole Foods Over Processed Junk
If it grew from the earth or came from an animal, I’m in. If it’s from a package full of words I can’t pronounce... pass. Oats, beans, fruits, veggies, yogurt, seeds — these are the basics that keep me feeling great.

  2. Protein is Queen
I aim for 30 grams of protein at every meal and about 15 grams for snacks. Yogurt, chia seeds, chicken, fish, beans — whatever’s easy and accessible. Protein keeps you full, energized, and strong.

  3. Eat Before You’re Hungry
This sounds small, but it’s a game-changer. If you wait until you’re starving, you’ll grab the easiest (usually least healthy) thing in reach. Staying ahead of hunger keeps your body fueled and your mind clear.

Life's About Balance, Not Perfection

Weekends are for fun, not for stress about food. If I’m heading to an event, I eat something healthy before I leave. That way, I’m not starving and grabbing whatever’s on the table. And if I want cake? I eat it. If I want a margarita? I definitely drink it (team skinny margarita, extra tequila, always).

It’s all about moderation. There’s always going to be more cake, more cocktails, more parties — you don’t have to eat or drink everything today.

Lazy-Girl Mobility — Your Body Will Thank You

Some days I don’t feel like going hard on a workout, and you know what? That’s okay. One of my favorite things to do is a super simple foam roller routine. You literally lie there, move your arms a little, and suddenly your chest and shoulders feel open, loose, and energized. Especially if you spend your days at a desk or hunched over... this is a game-changer.

Now, if you’re ready for a little movement, watch this week's video to follow along with me as I walk you through a shoulder and chest mobility routine from start to finish!  Whether you’re working long hours, chasing toddlers, or both, this is one of those "lazy but powerful" movement series that makes a huge difference.

You don’t need a perfect workout plan, you just need to start. Your future self will thank you for it.
